Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR)
CBPR is a partnership approach to research that equitably involves community members, organizational representatives, and academic researchers in all aspects of the research process.
It enables all partners to contribute their expertise with shared responsibility and ownership, enhances the understanding of a given issue, and integrates the knowledge gained with action to improve the health and well-being of community members, such as through interventions and policy change.
CBPR OBJECTIVES
Demonstrate the impact of emissions from waste stations on air quality in S.E. Queens through research field measurements of NO2, O3, SO2, PM2.5, toxic metals, VOCs, and PFAS.
Organize a training program, in collaboration with community leaders and interdisciplinary research partners, to prepare residents to collect air quality data and learn how climate health, environmental justice, and community science tools can be used to improve the management of solid waste facilities in Jamaica, Queens.
Translate research results into climate and policy solutions that reduce traffic emissions, relieve health burdens, and promote environmental justice in Jamaica, Queens.
